Evaluation- Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms of real media products?

Our music video is of the indie music genre so I did research into features that are typical of indie music videos. Some of these features are:

  • Flannel Shirts
  • Nice Hair
  • Typically white Caucasian performers
  • Guitar-acoustic
  • Mostly performance based
  • Strong narrative
  • Sometimes concept based

After finding out the generic codes of indie music videos we then as a group decided whether we wanted to challenge or conform to these features. Most indie music videos have a strong narrative and we incorporated this idea throughout our music video as it is strongly narrative based. The message/themes of our song is about missing someone so we wanted insert a strong narrative that conveyed this message. Although having a strong narrative allows our music video to develop real indie music video conventions it also challenges them. Many indie artists may include themselves in the narrative or have a minimum of 2-3 lead performers. However we used 5 different actors each with a different narrative but with the same theme. Our artist is also not a part of the narrative and only delivers a performance. Performance based music videos are very typical of the indie music videos so we used this aspect of a real media product. Indie music videos are sometimes concept based. However we did not use this form of video in our media product. We did this because we wanted to reveal a strong message through our performance and we decided it would be clearer to our audience to do this via narrative as opposed to revealing the theme by a concept.

We wanted our performer to fit the conventions of those of the indie genre. Performers in the indie genre are typically white Caucasian performers and we chose to use this convention to add realism to our music video. However we also subverted this conventional representation as we used performers of many different ethnic backgrounds for the narrative sequences. We chose to subvert this conventional representation because we wanted our music video to have more of an universal appeal and we thought that this was achievable by the use of using performers from different ethnic backgrounds. Our music video could be compared to Nick Jonas’ music video ‘Who am I’ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qQ3Sz0IMmE as it is of the Indie/pop genre and uses a variety of different performers that are different ages, genders and of different ethnics, thus also subverting the convention of white-Caucasian male performers. We also considered factors such as costume/hair and makeup of indie music videos so we could decide whether we would want to use, develop or challenge them. Flannel shirts are a typical item of costume of indie music videos and our performer/artist wears one throughout giving his performance.

In terms of mise-en-scene we used different aspects such as costume, lighting and location to develop, challenge or confirm real media products. Our main performer wore a checked/flannel shirt. We asked the female performers in our music video to wear a costume that does not portray them as promiscuous, thus not gratifying the male gaze. This is similar to Paramore’s Hayley Williams who also does not dress provocatively in music videos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvnkAtWcKYg. We requested that our female performers do this because it encourages the audience to focus on the narrative the performer is telling as opposed to their image. Throughout our performance we generally used natural/bright lighting as we did a lot of filming outside. We filmed at a variety of different locations, we tried to think outside of the box and film out of the Wembley area. We filmed some scenery shots of London monuments at Primrose Hill. On that particular day of filming it was very cloudy and it made the lighting appear to be dull. However this worked in our favour as at the start of the music video we are trying to set the scene and reveal the sorrow the performers will be feeling.

Indie music videos generally have a guitar-acoustic as opposed to a heavy bass. Our song uses acoustic guitar throughout. To add to the authenticity of the music video we had our artist/performer deliver a performance whilst a playing an acoustic guitar, therefore using the conventions of existing Indie music videos.

In conclusion I would suggest that our media product generally uses the forms of real media products such as using a performance and narrative based music video and having our main performer play a guitar. It also does develop some conventions of indie music videos and challenge a small selection of them such as having performers of different ethnic backgrounds.

Evaluation- Question 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

For my ancillary task I had to create a CD cover- front and back, an insert as well as a magazine promotional poster for the album. Before beginning to create my ancillary task I did research into the conventions of album covers and promotional posters so I knew what I would need to include in my ancillary task. We analysed the front cover of Angie Stone’s- Mahogany Soul. She used a consistent brown/mahogany colour scheme to represent a modest, down to earth vibe or attitude. Although this album is from the Soul genre it greatly influenced our album cover, which is of the Indie genre. We used a similar colour scheme but rather than having the artist as our main image, we used an image of a tree, revealing the down to earth, modest personality of our performer. We also used the same colour scheme in our promotional poster showing a relation between the two.

When creating the back cover to the album, we had to create a list of songs to include on the back cover. Unlike Angie Stone’s- Mahogany Soul we structured our list of songs vertically as opposed to horizontally. Again we did not use an image of our artist, but instead an image of a clock, relating to the album title ‘TIME’. Whereas Angie Stone’s back cover uses an image of herself. The name of our album closely relates to our music video (product) as it explores the themes of missing people and not having enough time together.

When it came to creating our insert and promotional poster I again analysed Angie Stone’s- Mahogany Soul promotional poster. Similarly to her we used the same colour scheme we had been using throughout our ancillary task to show a link between them. Our promotional poster featured the name of the album and artist, the name of the song that we used for our music video, an image of the album and the date it would be released into stores. Likewise Mahogany Soul lists the best selling songs from the album as well as the name of the album and an image of the artist.

Overall we created authentic products in our ancillary task that assist and compliment our music video. We show a clear link between our ancillary task and our music video by featuring the name of the song used in our video on our album and promotional poster. We also used an image of our main performer on our promotional poster and on our insert, thus showing a clear relationship between our music video and our ancillary task.

Evaluation- Question 4

How did you use new media technologies in the construction, research and planning and evaluation stages?

Whilst creating my music video I used new media technologies throughout my construction, research and planning and evaluation stages.

One piece of technology that I used was micro-soft word. I used this world- wide software and various stages of my production such as my research and planning and my evaluation stage. I particularly used this Microsoft word when completing my evaluation and textual analysis. This was helpful as the various tools on Microsoft word such as spell and grammar check and thesaurus helped me to complete my work at a high standard.

When it came to filming scenes for our music video we used a Sony hand-held camera that belonged to the school. As I own a similar camera to the one we used, I had some experience working with a camera, which proved to be useful when it came to filming and adding variety to our shot angles. Although it could be suggested that this camera is of a basic standard, we found it generally captured our footage well. However we found ourselves unsatisfied with the zoom on the camera so we made sure that we did not use it when choosing our final footage. When filming we used natural lighting, which at times conflicted with our shooting schedule due to bad weather.

On the other hand, we were able to control our lighting when using Tricaster to film our green screen/ chroma key filming. This piece of technology was particularly new to me. When filming our performer we were able to use appropriate effects such as fee to video, projector, web streaming and live virtual sets. At this point we used artificial light when filming our “studio scenes”. We were also able to further experiment with angles as we used two cameras placed at different angles rerecording at the same time.

The programme that I most frequently used was Adobe Premiere. I used the software in my planning and research stage to edit my VOX POPS as well as the construction stage to edit my music video. In the construction stage I first used Premiere to capture/import my footage, then I began to use the tools to cut away unwanted footage and to add effects to my music video. Adobe Premiere Pro proved to be very helpful as I was able to create an authentic music video as I used effects such as dip to black/white and cross dissolve which are used in real music videos.

I used www.blogspot.com for the presentation on my all of my work. I was familiar with blogspot as I used it to present my work for my foundation production. As I was familiar with blogspot I found that using the website was not time-consuming. Another website I frequently used was www.slideshare.com. I used this website to so I was able to present my work in a PowerPoint. Some of these PowerPoint’s I used when presenting my song choice and for my evaluation. I found this website useful as it enabled me to present different technologies on my blog. I also frequently used www.google.com when completing the research and planning part of my production. I used it to find images of CD covers of the indie genre so I knew what were the codes and conventions of an alum cover and for inspiration.

When creating my ancillary task I used a professional camera owned by the school. This camera proved to be very successful as it had different settings that ensured our image was of a good quality and looked authentic.

When creating my ancillary task, which included a CD Album cover- back and front and a promotional poster for the album, I used Adobe Photoshop. I was familiar with this software as I used it to create my foundation production. I felt that I had developed my skills on Photoshop. Some of these skills are being able to use the cropping tool, the airbrush tool, and being able to soften the edges of an image. Photoshop greatly helped me to produce an authentic ancillary task.

Running Comentary and Print Screens of Editing

This is a screen shot of our stop motion motif of a letter. At this point we had just uploaded the pictures onto Adobe Pro Premiere and now we are putting them in the correct order to ensure that the stop motion sequence runs correctly.

Running Comentary and Print Screens of Editing

Here we used the editing tool “additive dissolve” to show the couple switching places. We chose this editing technique to reveal that the couple are together, but yet they are moving away from each other.
